Honma Beres 2022: Black and Aizu
Honma Beres Black for Men
Already in the 2021 season, there was a special edition of Beres as a Black Edition. That was, so to speak, a small pre-announcement of what was planned. Now Honma has got serious and launched its new Beres series, which is actually completely black: Beres Black.
The Beres Black are a bit different from the typical Beres clubs: there are no stars anymore and shafts are a bit stiffer - compared to the predecessor and the Aizu series. However, this has a big advantage: the Beres Black are therefore also suitable for players with slightly higher club head speeds. So especially for those players who up to now have always swung "too fast" to be considered for Beres.
The Beres Black are available with 42g, 44g, 47g and 50g shafts. This is the range of the "normal" Beres Black series. In addition, there is a Beres Black Dynamic extension, which we will go into in more detail in a moment.
The Beres Black shafts are based on a slightly different technology and are reinforced with aluminium fibres in the grip area. Of course, the Beres Black shafts are the soft and light carbon shafts typical for Beres. But here Honma has worked with new materials to strengthen the feeling in the grip area. All in all, the Beres Black are designed for a slightly flatter launch than the shafts of the Aizu series.
Basically you can say that the Beres Black still aims for maximum forgiveness, ball speeds and launch, but a bit more "toned down" than the previous model or the Beres Aizu.
Beres Black Dynamic
The Beres Black Dynamic only differ from the standard Beres Black in the shafts. The shafts of the Dynamic series are generally a little heavier and have a different shaft profile. This is not quite so strongly designed for maximum launch and is therefore more suitable for players who have less difficulty getting the ball into the air.
Beres Black Dynamic comes in three shaft weights and flexes: Regular, Stiff-Regular and Stiff with 49g, 52g and 55g respectively. The last option in particular is definitely an option for players with up to 95mph driver club head speeds. These players could not be covered by the traditional Beres line and the Beres Aizu so far.
The Beres Black Dynamic is therefore also the reason why the new Beres 2022 series can cover such a broad spectrum as never before. The possibilities to give you the exact fitting Beres club have therefore increased significantly.
Honma Beres Aizu
Men have the luxury of two series in the new Beres line. In addition to the Beres Black, there is also the Beres Aizu. These are basically the same as the traditional Beres line and are available as usual with 2 to 5 stars.
Without a doubt, Honma has reached deep into its bag of tricks and certainly surprised many. On the one hand with the additional Black Edition and above all the look. Because here you can see at first glance what has been done.
The background to the artistic design of the new Beres Aizu is as follows: the aim was to commemorate the victims of the tsunami and nuclear disaster of 2011 and an art form typical of the Fukushima region was chosen. This art is practised by artists from the Aizu region near Fukushima. Honma has decided on a work of art here and actually packed it on every Beres Aizu club. Not only on the insert in the irons, but also on the driver, wood and utility heads.
Basically this painting is standard, but can be deselected for a 4 or 5 star order.
Admittedly, the first sight takes some getting used to and we were not quite sure what to make of it at first either. But once you have held the new Beres Aizu in your hands for a while, you quickly get used to it and don't want to do without it. Especially in the irons, the inlay looks absolutely fantastic and is a real one-of-a-kind.
Honma Beres Aizu for Ladies
Unfortunately there is no Beres Black Edition for ladies. The Beres Aizu ladies are 39g as a standard variant, although 41g shafts can also be ordered. The lacquering of the heads and shafts at 2 stars is completely white - which looks very classy especially with the Aizu art.
With 3 stars - the most frequently sold variant - the lacquering is a very noble pink and thus much more inconspicuous than the predecessor.
Honma Beres Aizu for Men
There is no question of this with the Aizu for men, because even the 3 star variant is very golden with a gold lacquer finish and golden shafts. One could easily confuse the Aizu 3 star with a 5 star Beres of the previous variant.
What is particularly positive is the wide range of shafts in the Beres Aizu for men. These range from 42g to 50g.
The Honma Beres Shafts
We are often asked why one should choose Honma Beres and our answer is the following: Honma makes higher quality shafts than any other manufacturer - at least in the segment of extremely light and soft shafts. The art is to produce a light and soft shaft that still has good torque values. And this is exactly what Honma achieves with its own and hand-made shafts like no other. The ArmRQ shafts used in the Beres have a maximum weight of 50g with Aizu and 55g with Beres Black. Even the 2 star version is already very high quality and without competition. The higher the number of stars, the higher the quality of the shaft. Whereby we must honestly say that the 3 star version is absolutely sufficient for most players. For 5 star shafts, for example, Honma needs 8 weeks in production and has the shafts subjected to quality tests by over 100 employees. Here you can be sure to get only the best of the best - but it also has its price.
Complete Beres Sets
Another advantage of Beres is that the entire set is coordinated. Beres players usually don't just buy a driver or set of irons, but everything from driver to sand wedge and sometimes even the Beres putter. With the latter it is not so important that the putter is matched to the set, but some people like it consistent. If you put your clubs together from different manufacturers you have the problem that the clubs can only be matched if you have them checked by a professional club maker. Things like loft, lie, swing weight, shaft length, total weight, etc. must fit. If your set consists of clubs from three different manufacturers this is practically impossible.
With Honma Beres the principle is always that it must be possible to obtain a complete set. As a rule you should make use of this possibility. And if this is not an option, you should at least give us the opportunity to control and adapt your set.
Honma Beres Drivers and Woods
The new Honma Beres drivers, woods and hybrids differ significantly from their predecessors. Not only visually after the Honma logo has been engraved on the clubface, but also in regards to playability. Because there is hardly any other club that is so strongly focused on anti-slice as this one. Honma focuses 100% on its target players. And they swing with a relatively low club head speed and usually strongly from the outside to the inside. A slice is the consequence that is not only far from the direction, but can also be anything but long. The new Honma Beres strongly counteract this - with a lot of offset and a clearly closed clubface position. In addition, the center of gravity in the clubhead is as close to the shaft as possible, which helps to keep the clubface closed at impact. So you could say that the Honma Beres are the ultimate slice killer.
Apart from that, Honma relies on the well-proven concept of making the launch as easy as possible and maximizing ball speed - especially for shots with low clubhead speed. Honma has been doing this very well for decades and there will only be small improvements compared to the predecessors.
Honma Beres Irons
In principle, the irons are connected to the woods. Again, the recipe is to simplify the launch and maximize ball speed. It is also about providing a sweetspot that is as large as possible and a wide sole to minimize interaction with the turf. There are also many other irons that are built on the same principle and do their job. In some respects, however, the Beres irons are much better, especially in terms of ball speed and launch. So if you need such a "Game Improvement" iron, the Honma Beres are the best choice.
What's with the Honma Stars?
What the Honma Beres stars are about we have already explained in detail in this article. In short, it is mainly the quality of the shafts that increases with the stars. The standard version is 2 star Beres and the maximum 5 stars, but most players vary between 2 and 3 stars because the difference is noticeable here. For example, the 3-star irons are a bit softer than the 2-star irons. And the 3-star Beres for men are available in two different shaft weights. When it comes to 4 or 5 stars, you not only pay for the valuable materials such as gold, but also for the high quality standards of the shafts. Because to produce a 5 star shaft, an extremely large amount of work is required. Usually you are already well served with the 2 or 3 star version - everything else is luxury.
